Colony Size

Pogonomyrmex rugosus "red and black" is a vibrant variant of the hardy harvester ant species, featuring a mix of red and black on both queens and workers. There is a significant amount of color variation based on where they were collected. The queens measure around 13mm, while workers are about 8mm. Known for their diligent seed-gathering behavior, these harvester ants primarily rely on seeds as the core of their diet. However, to support healthy growth, especially during the early stages of colony development, they also require insect protein as a supplemental food source.

This species is highly suitable for beginner ant enthusiasts due to its robust nature and relatively low-maintenance care. Pogonomyrmex rugosus "red and black" are poor climbers, which greatly reduces the chance of escape and simplifies barrier maintenance. Once the colony is established, their feeding needs are easy to meet, as they thrive on a diet primarily composed of seeds with the occasional addition of insect protein.

Pogonomyrmex rugosus "red and black" is a fantastic choice for those new to the hobby or those looking for a species that is both fascinating and straightforward to care for. It's important to note, however, that these ants are capable of delivering a potent sting when provoked, which can be quite painful. As such, proper care and handling are essential for a positive ant-keeping experience.
