Colony Size

Camponotus ca-02 is a carpenter ant species native to California, recognized as the largest ant species in the state and one of the largest in the United States. These ants are also known for their distinctive appearance, with queens featuring black heads and thoraxes contrasted by bright orange-brown gasters. Averaging 18-22mm in size, this species has two castes of workers: the smaller, all-brown/golden minors and the larger majors, which can reach up to 18mm and boast impressive mandibles with a distinctive black head.

Despite their slow growth and need for diapause, similar to other Camponotus species, they are incredibly hardy. However, they present a unique challenge due to their exceptional climbing ability and tendency to wear through fluon barriers faster than other species. Their love for nectar is unparalleled, often resulting in their gasters swelling visibly with the color of the nectar they've consumed. This species also requires regular insect protein for growth.

Camponotus ca-02 is ideal for ant keepers ready to tackle a more intermediate to expert level of care, offering both beauty and resilience. However, due to their difficulty in containment, they require diligent barrier management. If you're not prepared for the extra effort, this species may prove too challenging.

Camponotus (Carpenter Ant) Care Sheet

Difficulty Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Pros:

  • Impressive size with workers averaging 18-22mm.
  • Two distinct castes: minors and majors, adding variety and interest.
  • Extremely hardy
  • Highly active, providing constant observation opportunities.
  • Non-stinging; instead, they spray formic acid, which smells like vinegar and is harmless to humans.

Cons:

  • Their large size and exceptional climbing ability can wear down fluon barriers faster, requiring frequent reapplication.
  • Requires a period of diapause, which can be challenging and demands specific environmental conditions.
  • Majors possess strong mandibles capable of delivering painful bites.

Care Requirements:

  • Temperature Range: 80-85F (80F preferred) using heat cable or heat mat paired with a thermostat. Like with most ants, having a heat gradient is beneficial.
  • Food: Insect protein and nectar (sugar water) are both required for optimal growth.
  • Humidity: Nests that are made properly will have a gradient to allow the ants to choose a humidity range that suits their needs.
  • Climbing Ability: Extremely good at climbing. Frequent barrier maintenance required.
  • No specific nest type is necessary.
  • Diapause is necessary for continued colony growth, ideal temperature is 50-65F for three months starting in winter.
