Camponotus ocreatus is a carpenter ant species adapted to arid and desert environments. This species is notable for its vivid coloration: queens display a dramatic pattern with a black head, a thorax that is half black and half orange-brown, and an abdomen that mirrors this color split. Minors have a black head with an orange thorax and abdomen, while majors feature a black head, brown/black thorax, and an orange/black abdomen. Queens measure approximately 17mm, minors around 8mm, and majors up to 13mm.

Caring for Camponotus ocreatus is straightforward as they do not require diapause. Proper heat and consistent care will ensure a vibrant and active colony.

Difficulty Level: Beginner-Intermediate

Pros:

Care Requirements:

  • Humidity: Nests that are made properly will have a gradient to allow the ants to choose a humidity range that suits their needs.
  • Climbing Ability: Very capable climbers. Regular barrier maintenance is required.
  • No specific nest type is necessary.
