Colony Size

Myrmecocystus mendax is a stunning species of honeypot ant that captivates with its distinctive coloring and unique behaviors. Both the queens and workers boast a vibrant combination of red and black, with deep red heads and thoraxes contrasting sharply against their sleek, black abdomens. While queens are around 13mm in size, the workers are smaller, averaging about 5-6mm. Like other honeypot ants, this species is famous for its replete formation—certain workers with specialized abdomens swell with nectar, turning them into living storage tanks that display the vibrant colors of the stored nectar. These repletes are a unique feature and one of the true wonders of keeping honeypot ants, but they also present their own challenges when it comes to care.

Caring for Myrmecocystus mendax requires some specific considerations to ensure the colony thrives. Given their need to form repletes, providing a nest with adequate vertical ceiling space is essential, as this environment allows the repletes to hang and develop properly. Additionally, these ants are exceptionally skilled climbers, making the maintenance of barriers and escape prevention measures an ongoing task. When relocating the colony to a new nest, handling can be quite challenging due to the need to carefully move each replete by hand to avoid damaging them. In terms of temperature, these ants thrive in warm environments that mimic their native habitats, and a varied diet that includes both protein sources and sweet liquids is essential to support their growth and replete development.

Myrmecocystus mendax is a fascinating choice for dedicated ant keepers who are ready for a rewarding challenge. With their captivating replete formation and dynamic colony behavior, these ants provide endless opportunities for observation and learning. However, the intermediate to advanced care level of this species requires a bit more experience. Potential owners should be prepared for meticulous barrier maintenance, careful handling during nest relocations, and the specific nesting needs of honeypot ants. If you're looking for a species that offers a unique experience and you're up for the challenge, Myrmecocystus mendax might be the perfect addition to your collection!
