Colony Size

Myrmecocystus placodops 02 ranks among the largest honeypot ant species globally, easily recognizable by their vivid red heads contrasted against black thoraxes and abdomens. Queens reach about 15mm, while workers range from 5 to 10mm, with repletes becoming significantly larger due to their swollen gasters filled with nectar. This striking coloration and unique behavior make them a standout species for ant enthusiasts.

While Myrmecocystus placodops is somewhat hardier than many other honeypot species, they still require intermediate to advanced care. Their nests must have vertical ceiling space to support the development of their repletes. These ants are also proficient climbers, so frequent barrier maintenance is essential to prevent escapes. Additionally, their fast growth rate means that colonies can outgrow their nests quickly. However, moving them to new nests is challenging due to the fragility of their repletes, making relocation a delicate process.

Myrmecocystus placodops is a dynamic choice for experienced ant keepers ready to handle the complexities of a large and active colony. Their rapid growth, combined with their specific care requirements and the difficulty of relocation, makes them suitable for those prepared for a hands-on ant-keeping experience.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Pros:

  • One of the largest honeypot species, with striking red and black coloration.
  • Hardy compared to many other honeypot ants.
  • Rapid growth rate with potential for quick colony expansion.
  • They do not sting, using formic acid for defense.

Cons:

  • Challenging to relocate due to the fragility of repletes.
  • Requires regular barrier maintenance due to excellent climbing ability.
  • Intermediate to advanced care level with specific nesting requirements.

Care Requirements:

  • Temperature Range: 85-90F (87F preferred) using a heat cable or heat mat paired with a thermostat. Like with most ants, having a heat gradient is beneficial.
  • Food: Insect protein and nectar (sugar water) are both necessary for optimal growth.
  •  Humidity: Nests that are made properly will have a gradient to allow the ants to choose a humidity range that suits their needs.
  • Climbing Ability: Excellent climbers. Regular barrier maintenance is required.
  • Honeypots require nests that have vertical ceiling space in order for proper replete formation. They also need sand to form their cocoons.
