Colony Size

Myrmecocystus semirufus is a visually striking honeypot species, with queens displaying a bright red head, a red/brown thorax, and a deep black abdomen. Workers share a similar appearance with red heads and thoraxes paired with black abdomens, ranging from 4 to 8mm in size, while queens reach about 13mm. As with other honeypot ants, the repletes in this species grow significantly larger as their gasters swell with nectar, adding a fascinating dimension to their colony structure.

Caring for Myrmecocystus semirufus involves providing a suitable environment with vertical ceiling space to support replete formation. This species is considered intermediate to advanced in difficulty due to its specific care needs and less hardy nature during the early stages of colony development. They are proficient climbers, which means regular barrier maintenance is essential to prevent potential escapes. Moreover, relocating the colony to a new nest can be quite challenging, as the fragile repletes often need to be moved manually.

Myrmecocystus semirufus is an excellent choice for experienced ant keepers who are prepared for its unique challenges. With their distinctive appearance and complex care requirements, they provide a rewarding experience for those willing to invest time and effort in their upkeep.

iNaturalist link for Myrmecocystus semirufus

Difficulty Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Pros:

  • Distinctive coloration with bright red heads/thoraxes and contrasting black abdomens.
  • Exhibits fascinating replete behavior common to honeypot ants.
  • They do not sting, using formic acid as their main form of defense.

Cons:

  • Intermediate to advanced care level due to specific requirements.
  • Less hardy during the early stages of colony development.
  • Requires regular barrier maintenance to prevent escapes.
  • Difficult to relocate due to the fragility of repletes, often requiring manual handling.

Care Requirements:

  • Temperature Range: 80-85F (82F preferred) using a heat cable or heat mat paired with a thermostat. Like with most ants, having a heat gradient is beneficial.
  • Food: Insect protein and nectar (sugar water) are both required for optimal growth.
  • Humidity: Nests that are properly made will have a humidity gradient, allowing the ants to choose the perfect range for their needs.
  • Honeypots require nest types that have vertical ceiling space to allow proper replete formation. They also need sand to form their cocoons.
