Novomessor cockerelli
Novomessor cockerelli
Novomessor cockerelli is an active and dynamic species renowned for its highly insectivorous nature. Queens and workers both have a deep maroon color with black abdomens, accented by variations of darker and lighter shades, with queens being slightly larger and bulkier at around 13mm.Workers vary in size from 6 to 13mm and are known for their agility and aggressive hunting behaviors, often taking down live prey items, which makes observing their natural foraging habits particularly fascinating.
This species is well-suited for beginner ant keepers due to its hardiness and rapid growth. Novomessor cockerelli thrives in hot environments, especially those resembling their native desert habitats. Their nests should be kept at higher temperatures to encourage optimal growth and activity levels. Although these ants only possess moderate climbing ability, periodic barrier maintenance is still recommended to prevent potential escapes. While they do not sting, they can bite; however, the bite is mild and not particularly painful.
With their robust nature and swift development, Novomessor cockerelli offers a great starting point for those new to ant-keeping. Their insectivorous diet and energetic foraging make them an engaging species to observe and care for, particularly for anyone interested in dynamic and fast-growing ant colonies.
