Colony Size

Pheidole xerophila is a species of big-headed ant that boasts a unique caste system, with both minor and major workers. The minor workers are small, solid black ants measuring around 3mm, while the major workers stand out with their disproportionately large red heads and black bodies, reaching about 5mm. Queens have a similar color pattern to the majors, with red heads and black bodies, and are approximately 6mm in size.

This species is known for its resilience and rapid growth, making it a suitable choice for beginner to intermediate ant keepers. Pheidole xerophila is a granivorous species, which means seeds are a staple of their diet, simplifying feeding requirements. However, due to the small size of the workers and their sheer numbers, moving the colony to a new nest can be quite a task. The use of an aspirator is recommended, but relocating hundreds of tiny workers will require patience and care.

For ant enthusiasts looking for a fast-growing and hardy species, Pheidole xerophila offers an interesting challenge. With their distinct caste system and granivorous diet, they provide a unique ant-keeping experience that combines ease of care with the excitement of managing a dynamic and bustling colony.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate

Pros:

  • Hardy and rapid growth rate.
  • Granivorous diet makes feeding simple and straightforward.
  • Interesting caste system with visually distinct minor and major workers.

Cons:

  • Managing a large number of tiny workers can be challenging without the proper tools.
  • Small workers that are capable climbers means that barrier maintenance is important

Care Requirements:

  • Temperature Range: 85-90F (88F preferred) using a heat cable or heat mat paired with a thermostat. Like with most ants, having a heat gradient is beneficial.
  • Food: Seeds are a staple in their diet. Insect protein is also highly recommended to increase growth rates and nectar (sugar water) on occasion is also helpful.
  • Humidity: Nests that are made properly will have a gradient to allow the ants to choose a humidity range that suits their needs.
  • No special nest type required as long as their is not chance for the small workers to escape.
