Colony Size

Veromessor andrei "castaneus" is an eye-catching all-red variant of the "true harvester" ant species. Both workers and queens are primarily red, but they also feature black on their abdomens, adding diversity to the colony's appearance. Queens measure around 9mm, while workers range from 4 to 7mm in size. These ants are known for their extensive seed-gathering behavior and can thrive entirely on a seed-based diet. While they are capable of surviving on seeds alone, providing them with insect protein can accelerate their growth.

Thanks to their adaptability and minimal care requirements, Veromessor andrei "castaneus" are perfect for beginners. They are hardy ants that can withstand a variety of conditions, making them one of the most forgiving species to care for. Their dietary flexibility—being able to live primarily on seeds—makes feeding straightforward, especially as the colony grows. Since they are moderate climbers, ensuring regular maintenance of barriers is necessary to prevent potential escapes.

Veromessor andrei "castaneus" stands out as one of the best choices for novice ant keepers due to its robust nature, ease of feeding, and minimal care needs. These ants do not sting but may bite if provoked; however, the bite is relatively mild and not particularly painful, making them a safe option for those new to the hobby.
