Number of Queens
Colony Size

Pogonomyrmex californicus, also known as the red harvester ant, is easily identified by its uniform red coloration, which covers the heads, thoraxes, and abdomens of both queens and workers. Queens measure about 9mm, while workers range in size from 5 to 7mm. As a harvester ant species, Pogonomyrmex californicus is known for its extensive seed-gathering behavior. Seeds form the bulk of their diet, but a supply of insect protein is also crucial, particularly during the initial growth phases, to support the development of a healthy colony.

This species is ideal for beginners due to its hardy nature and ease of care. Unlike more agile ants, Pogonomyrmex californicus is a poor climber, significantly minimizing the risk of escapes and making barrier maintenance a simple task. Once the colony is established, feeding them is easy since they primarily rely on seeds, with occasional insect protein supplements.

Overall, Pogonomyrmex californicus is a great choice for those new to ant-keeping, especially those interested in harvester ants. While they are generally low-maintenance and straightforward to manage, keep in mind that they are capable of delivering a potent sting if provoked, which can cause pain.

Pogonomyrmex (Harvester Ant) Care Sheet

iNaturalist link for Pogonomyrmex californicus

Difficulty Level: Beginner

Pros:

  • Beginner-friendly with low-maintenance care requirements.
  • Poor climbers, reducing the chance of escape.
  • Simple feeding needs, primarily centered around seeds.

Cons:

  • Can sting when provoked, and their sting is painful.

Care Requirements:

  • Temperature Range: 90-95F (93F preferred) using heat cable or heat mat paired with a thermostat. Like with most ants, having a heat gradient is beneficial.
  • Food: Highly granivorous but still need insect protein for proper development, especially while the colony is still small. Nectar (sugar water) can be provided on occasion.
  • Humidity: Nests that are made properly will have a gradient to allow the ants to choose a humidity range that suits their needs.
  • No special nest type is required.
